Keeping Your Teeth Clean

Teeth cleaning can be as individual as each of us. Prior to your oral hygiene practices there is your diet and what you put into your mouth. Smoking or chewing tobacco can be harmful to your teeth. Excessive sugar intact via carbonated beverages or candy can increase plaque, tartar and cavities. Coffee can create stains as well as your favorite red wine. So even though you can control your diet you can’t change the natural makeup of your body. The moist, warm environment inside your mouth, the saliva and the perfect warm temperature contribute to bacteria and plaque formation. That is when the trouble begins. Simple good habits regarding your consistent oral hygiene can prevent unnecessary cascading negative effects. Also, scheduling regular dental appointments for professional cleaning allows you to remain proactive and it becomes a true win-win.

An At Home Routine

What is considered good oral hygiene at home? No one gets a pass on sound oral hygiene. The American Dental Association recommends that you brush your teeth at least twice a day. Everyone. All of us. They would prefer you take it a step further and brush after every meal. This simple effort removes the harmful food and plaque that is the core of the problem. You really want to be cognizant of your meals that contain sugar. Sugar can attack tooth enamel. If you don’t brush consistently plaque forms on your teeth and over time turns into a harder substance called tartar. You also need to replace that toothbrush every three to four months as well. The next element to introduce into your good habit building is that of flossing. Often times your brushing efforts may not get to the plaque between your teeth. Regular flossing will prevent this buildup. Also, with the introduction of the electric toothbrush, the efficiencies and effectiveness of brushing has been improved. You might want to consider purchasing one of these.

Professional Cleaning

To continue with the sound practice of preventive dentistry the health organizations would like you to visit your dentist twice a year. If you combine solid at home habits and two visits a year you have an unbeatable preventive program in place. When you schedule your dental cleaning you can expect a comprehensive oral exam as well. This evaluation will visually review your entire mouth and identify any problems or issues. When the exam is completed the dentist or hygienist will perform a regular cleaning. They will use an ultrasonic scaler first to remove debris and plaque from your teeth, and in between your teeth. If necessary they may need to use a hand held scaler to remove some stubborn plaque or tartar. Again, good consistent care of your teeth at home not only prevents this build up but the potential of gum disease as well if you don’t brush regularly. When the cleaning is completed the hygienist or dental assistant will then polish your teeth, one at a time, with a special paste. They will also finish the cleaning with a flossing of your teeth. Recommendations and suggestions may follow depending on the conditions you came in with. It will also be suggested once a year that X-rays are taken to show your teeth below the surface to identify any possible problems that can’t be seen with the naked eye.

The Deep Cleaning Process

A deep cleaning is not the same as having your teeth cleaned. The nasty plaque and tartar we discussed earlier, if not removed, can adhere to your teeth below the gum line. This can lead to gum disease, periodontal disease or even gingivitis. The CDC claims that 64 million adults are living with gum disease. Gum disease is certainly treatable, curable and by all means preventable. This number means we have quite a few fellow Americans that are not exercising good oral hygiene. If the evaluation shows this you will be recommended to have a deep cleaning, or a scaling and root planing procedure. Usually the area to be treated is numbed with a local anesthetic. Then the dentist or hygienist will work carefully under the gum line to clean away the tartar and debris on the tooth. The dentist can then shape or plane the root of the tooth to remove spots where the bacteria likes to collect. With the removal of the damaging plaque and tartar the gums will recover over time. If you experience this process it is best to expect and schedule regular maintenance type visits every three months to monitor your teeth and gums.

Preventive Measures

To reiterate, by creating good sound habits at home and seeing your dentist twice a year you can prevent some serious issues that can sneak up on you. By simply brushing well twice and day and flossing at least once a day you can prevent the bacteria that creates the plaque that then continues to destroy both teeth and gums. These practices need to be reinforced with forgetful children as well as any age of an adult. By practicing good care of your teeth, only several minutes a day, keeps them healthy and avoids cavities, gum disease and enamel wear. As mentioned earlier, a combination of at home care and seeing your dentist twice a year for an exam and professional cleaning will meet all recommendations in maintaining optimal oral health. Eating a balanced diet will also help protect your teeth as well as other bodily functions. Getting your teeth proper nutrients and vitamins is important. Limiting sugar and carbohydrates is important as well. We didn’t even mention the value of drinking plenty of water every day. Every one of us, at any age, will benefit from preventive dentistry. Teeth cleaning is important for children to develop strong and healthy adult teeth. Good dental hygiene can reduce the risk of potential diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, respiratory disease and cancer. Everything you put into your body passes through your mouth. With proper teeth cleaning you might even prevent or eliminate the potential for other costly dental procedures such a fillings, root canals or dental implants. Says a lot for simply cleaning your teeth.

ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY DENTISTRY SINCE 1994

Traditionally, hours of hand labor in a dental laboratory are invested in these precise products. With the adoption of more technology into dentistry, digital imaging continues to grow in importance. Most restorations begin with a mold of your mouth that involves messy impression materials. With the Itero Digital Scanner, you can say goodbye to the mess. Itero eliminates this step, replacing it with simple digital images captured with a handheld wand. The images quickly appear on a computer monitor as 3-D models of your teeth.

Expert Tooth Restoration Using Porcelain Crowns

Porcelain dental crowns are used to restore dental implants, to secure dental bridges, restore and help repair broken or damaged teeth. Dental crowns can be performed in one visit. The goal with dental crowns is to create a natural looking smile. These types of crowns can add the strength and durability to any tooth with any needed repair. Aesthetically, dental crowns are used to cover a discolored tooth and even narrow the gaps between largely separated teeth.

The Finest Porcelain Veneers for a New Smile

At Ritter & Ramsey, watching patients discover a brilliant new smile is the highlight of our days. Porcelain veneers can transform a smile dramatically. A beautiful new set of porcelain veneers can correct chips, stains, and even deeply discolored teeth. But they can also alter the length and size of teeth, or help teeth that seem rotated appear straight. While it sounds dramatic, only the stunning visual outcome is surprising. Porcelain veneers provide a highly conservative approach to aesthetic smile makeovers.
