Dental Onlays

When teeth undergo significant damage, whether this be trauma, heavy bite forces, or developed cavities, there are several intervention options that may be considered, such as tooth extraction and root canals. In other cases, the issue may be small enough that all that is required is an inlay or onlay. Inlays and onlays allow the unbroken portions of your tooth to remain uncut and takes pressure off your teeth. Taking this approach will help strengthen the tooth and improve the overall aesthetic appearance of your smile.

What Is The Difference Between An Inlay And An Onlay?

The main difference between an inlay and an onlay is that an inlay is placed on the center of a tooth and does not cover the cusp. An onlay will be used if the tooth has been damaged severely enough that it requires a cusp or cusps to be covered. An inlay or onlay is a stronger and more precise alternative to a filling, and less intensive than having a dental crown placed.

At Ritter and Ramsey, we are committed to working diligently to help you achieve a smile that is true to you and gives you the confidence you deserve. If you are scheduled to have an inlay or onlay procedure, or if you have any questions about the procedure, please contact us at (561) 626-6667.

Inlay & Onlay Aftercare

Following your inlay or onlay procedure, you may experience some irritation or numbness. It is a good idea to avoid extremely hot or extremely cold beverages, as well as sticky foods to reduce your discomfort. Once the discomfort has subsided, you can resume your normal eating habits, although it is important to understand that the primary reason most people need inlays or onlays placed is because they have not been practicing
good oral hygiene habits in the first place. Although there are times when oral health issues in adults are unavoidable, there are several things you can do to promote good oral health habits and prevent similar issues from developing in the future. To best take care of your teeth, be sure to follow these oral health practices.

  • Practice consistent and proper brushing and flossing habits: One of the most important things you can do to maintain good oral health is to practice good daily oral hygiene habits. Make sure to brush at least twice daily and for two minutes at a time. It is also important to floss daily. If you have an aversion to flossing, consider using toothpicks or specialty brushes.
  • Limit sugar and starch: Your daily eating habits play a critical role in the overall health and longevity of your teeth. Avoid foods that are high in starch as much as possible, as these foods are essentially fuel for bacteria. If you do drink sugary liquids, try to use a straw, as doing so will limit the amount of exposure of sugar to your teeth before swallowing. It is also important to drink water after every meal. Swishing water after you have finished eating can help clean remaining deposits of food.
  • Address issues before they become bigger problems: Many people understandably have phobias or concerns about visiting a dentist, especially when they suspect something may be wrong, but the longer you avoid addressing an issue, the more severe that issue will become and the greater the likelihood will be that other problems develop as a result.
  • Schedule regular visits: In addition to practicing these self-care habits, the other best way for maintaining good oral health is to regularly visit your dentist every six months. These visits allow your dentist to provide you with deep cleanings and monitor your overall dental health, catching problems before they become real issues.

Practicing these oral hygiene practice will help ensure that your inlays and onlays last as long as possible, but do be aware that inlays and onlays are not permanent solutions and will eventually need to be replaced.

The Inlay & Onlay Procedure

Inlays and onlays can be taken care of in two trips to the dentist office. At your initial visit, your dentist will prepare the tooth and take an impression of the area that needs to be addressed. Once this is complete, they will provide you with an anesthetic to numb the area and begin removing decay or old filling materials. Next, they will prepare the affected space by cleaning and shaping the surface for the new restoration. They will then provide a temporary filling to use until your next appointment.

After the mold has been formed, it will be sent to a laboratory, where technicians will design a restoration piece. There are a range of materials that can be used for this restoration, including gold for less visible repairs and porcelain for areas that are more visible when smiling. For those who have issues with teeth grinding, a thin resin material may be your best option.

At your follow up appointment, the onlay will be fitted and then cemented into place after you and your dentist have determined that it feels appropriate and matches your natural bite.

ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY DENTISTRY SINCE 1994

Traditionally, hours of hand labor in a dental laboratory are invested in these precise products. With the adoption of more technology into dentistry, digital imaging continues to grow in importance. Most restorations begin with a mold of your mouth that involves messy impression materials. With the Itero Digital Scanner, you can say goodbye to the mess. Itero eliminates this step, replacing it with simple digital images captured with a handheld wand. The images quickly appear on a computer monitor as 3-D models of your teeth.

Expert Tooth Restoration Using Porcelain Crowns

Porcelain dental crowns are used to restore dental implants, to secure dental bridges, restore and help repair broken or damaged teeth. Dental crowns can be performed in one visit. The goal with dental crowns is to create a natural looking smile. These types of crowns can add the strength and durability to any tooth with any needed repair. Aesthetically, dental crowns are used to cover a discolored tooth and even narrow the gaps between largely separated teeth.

The Finest Porcelain Veneers for a New Smile

At Ritter & Ramsey, watching patients discover a brilliant new smile is the highlight of our days. Porcelain veneers can transform a smile dramatically. A beautiful new set of porcelain veneers can correct chips, stains, and even deeply discolored teeth. But they can also alter the length and size of teeth, or help teeth that seem rotated appear straight. While it sounds dramatic, only the stunning visual outcome is surprising. Porcelain veneers provide a highly conservative approach to aesthetic smile makeovers.
