What Is Dental Sedation?
Does the simple thought of visiting the dental office create anxiety for you? You are not alone. Many fellow Americans suffer from long time fears, anxieties and phobias when it comes to scheduling and visiting your dentist. Many folks would rather endure the discomfort of a toothache versus setting foot in a dentist’s office. Some phobias are so bad that they do not seek the treatment that their teeth or gums desperately needs. Sedation dentistry is a common solution for these issues. Let’s identify anxiety first and then review sedation dentistry and how it can allow you to have a relaxing, pain free dental exam and check-up. Your oral hygiene is very, very important and sedation dentistry can help you push past your fears and anxiety.
Anxiety Issues
Simply put, anxiety is a feeling that builds within you creating a sense of worry, nervousness and an overall feeling of uneasiness. The idea of having your teeth cleaned suddenly makes your entire body tense up with fear. Usually this feeling is associated with an upcoming event and the uncertainty of a potential outcome. This nervous disorder is characterized by excessive uneasiness and building apprehension. It can result in compulsive behavior and often times various levels of panic attacks. So, if you find yourself encountering any of these feeling of doubt as you schedule a dental appointment or if you become tense, maybe start sweating and even have an increased pulse rate you might want to mention these feelings to your dentist and the two of you can discuss sedation dentistry together and whether you indeed are a candidate. Again, an easy fix or solution so you can maintain your necessary regular checkups. Dental visits should be scheduled twice a year for simple examinations, teeth cleaning and x-rays to ensure your teeth and gums are the healthiest they can be.

What’s Best For YOU
First and foremost it is very important for you to understand the guidelines for proper care of your teeth and gums. The health industry has agreed that brushing your teeth twice a day will give you adequate care. Brush properly, thoroughly, and replace that toothbrush several times a year. The damage in your mouth is created by the amount of bacteria in your mouth. That bacteria is affected by what you eat and drink. If you have a sweet tooth and consume a lot of sugar, or you smoke, or enjoy coffee and red wine. Brushing removes the bacteria that wants to sit on your teeth creating plaque and later turning into tartar. Flossing is strongly recommended to get between your teeth. Finally, visiting your dentist is suggested twice a year. So, if you are anxious about this part of your good oral hygiene, consult with your dentist about the possibility of sedation dentistry. Take the edge off. Take care of yourself!
Types Of Sedation Dentistry
Sedation dentistry can be rated from minimal, moderate, deep sedation to general anesthesia. The most common form of dental sedation is that of nitrous oxide, or commonly called laughing gas. The industry term is an inhalation analgesia and simply alleviates pain or discomfort. A mask is placed over your nose to give you a mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide that you then inhale. Nitrous oxide does not put you to sleep and readily reduces anxiety. It is very safe and is frequently used in dental offices. The benefits of using nitrous oxide is that it allows you to return to work or your home, it has no lasting hangover feeling, it allows for pain free dental procedures and of course lets you enjoy a relaxed state throughout the visit. A second form of sedation dentistry is that of a pill or liquid which of course is administered orally. This is called enteral sedation. It may be Halcion, which is like Valium, and is taken about an hour before the procedure. The pill will make you a bit groggy or drowsy. This is often used in combination with nitrous oxide, leaving you awake but addresses your nervousness as well. Intravenous sedation, or IV, is also a very common method to relieve levels of anxiety. This method injects the sedative directly into a vein. This technique allows the dentist to provide a deeper sedation still keeping you awake, and may be introduced depending on the dental procedure you are preparing for. It works quickly and the dentist can continue to adjust depending on the complexity and duration of the procedure you are undertaking. It will also require some recovery time at the office before you leave. Another method is that of general anesthesia. With sedation injected again into your vein this sedation will put you to sleep for the entire procedure. You may have nitrous oxide as well. This method will necessitate a thorough recovery time in the dental office before you are allowed to leave.
A Definition Of Sedation Dentistry
Sedation dentistry is a process that can be used to establish with you, the patient, a relaxed, easy and calm stated through the use of sedatives in a variety of ways. Through the administration of either a gas via a mask, an IV injection, or a pill, your fears and phobias can be easily managed. Sedation dentistry can be used for everything from the most invasive procedures to a simple exam and teeth cleaning. It depends on your level of anxiety. It’s available to accomplish what needs to be done; taking care of your teeth.
Guidelines To Ensure Safety
The American Dental Association establishes guidelines and outlines how dentists need to train for and provide sedation dentistry. The board of dentistry in you state determines the type of licensing your dentist will require to administer sedation dentistry. Due to the various types of sedation additional training most likely is required. This means that most dental offices are qualified for and can administer nitrous oxide, or an IV, they may not be able to offer general anesthesia as an example. You dentist will also have a sedation that he or she has become comfortable both administering, controlling and confident with the results.
ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY DENTISTRY SINCE 1994
Traditionally, hours of hand labor in a dental laboratory are invested in these precise products. With the adoption of more technology into dentistry, digital imaging continues to grow in importance. Most restorations begin with a mold of your mouth that involves messy impression materials. With the Itero Digital Scanner, you can say goodbye to the mess. Itero eliminates this step, replacing it with simple digital images captured with a handheld wand. The images quickly appear on a computer monitor as 3-D models of your teeth.
