Cost to Fix Diastema

A diastema is a gap between two teeth measuring more than 0.5 millimeters. They are not harmful to the health of your mouth but if you choose to correct it, there are a number of options available to you. We will review some of those options here.

Frenectomy: The band of tissue that attaches the upper lip to the upper gum is called a frenum. If the frenum is too large, it can press down on the teeth and cause a diastema. Your dentist or oral surgeon can perform a frenectomy to trim the frenum and relieve the teeth. A frenectomy costs between $250 and $1200. Insurance is unlikely to cover this procedure.

Teeth Effect Bands: The least costly option, also known as “teeth gap bands”, These are non-latex rubber bands that fit over the two teeth at night to draw the teeth together while you sleep. This is not the best option as the teeth can come together and leave gaps on either side or they could become crooked or loose from its socket and the process can be quite painful. These could actually do more harm than good in the long run. Teeth effect vans cost between $4 and $30 for 50 to 100 bands.

Composite Bonding: Dental bonding is a great option for closing a gap. It is quick and easy and lasts for a few years. The cost for dental bonding runs between $300 and $800 per tooth. The drawback to dental bonding is that it is not as strong as porcelain so it is more prone to chips and unlike porcelain which does not stain, composite bonding can stain. Dental bonding done for cosmetic reasons will not be covered by insurance.

Porcelain Veneers: Veneers are another quick and easy way to close a diastema. The veneers are constructed from porcelain and resist chipping and staining! Veneers cost between $500 and $2000 per tooth. Veneers are considered cosmetic and therefore will probably not be covered by your insurance.

Crowns: Dental crowns can be used when a diastema is accompanied by decay in the teeth. Crowns range from $500-$3000 per tooth. The lower end of that price spectrum is porcelain fused to metal crowns and the higher end are crowns fabricated of all porcelain. Dental insurance will usually cover some portion of the cost of crowns if they are deemed medically necessary as with decay.

Orthodontia: Braces are a common treatment for gabs especially in children. Adults that want to undergo orthodontic treatment may choose to go the clear a liner route instead of traditional metal braces. Braces can be applied in a limited manner on only the six upper front teeth to close a diastema. Limited ortho costs between $2000 and $3000. If the patient needs a full set of braces, that can cost between $1500 and $13,000 depending on the extent of treatment. Your orthodontist may also be able to fix a small gap with a retainer which would cost between $500 in $2500. Most insurance plans cover pediatric orthodontics but not adults. Be sure to consult your insurance company to find out if you are covered!
