Use these early times to create good habits. One area often overlooked is good oral hygiene. It starts with their food and beverage intact and continues through with proper care of their teeth. Yes, just like an adult, their mouth and teeth are immediately susceptible to disease, infection and cavities. You can help avoid all of that with good parenting and then all parties win.

Create Good Oral Hygiene With Children

Tooth decay can begin at a very early age if not kept in check. Almost 50% of youngsters between the ages of 2 and 11 have experienced tooth decay and around a third of those 9 to 11 years old have cavities in their permanent teeth. All of this can be controlled and minimized with good parenting. Care for baby teeth should begin immediately. As soon has your child has a tooth, brush it. Now, what creates many problems with tooth decay is sugar. Even breast milk contains sugar. So think about trying to have your child drink some water after milk or formula. Some other preventative tips from Drs. Ritter and Ramsey are to wean your child from breastfeeding and bottled milk at one year of age or thumb-sucking. This will help avoid decay and minimize any jaw growth problems that can result from excessive sucking. Teach your youngster how to brush his or her teeth, and then monitor and coach. Don’t give them sugary drinks before bedtime and think about using a straw if you do offer one so the liquid has less contact with the teeth. Better yet, be conscious of their sugar intact across all foods and drink.

What Is Usually Performed At The Visit

At every exam Drs. Ritter and Ramsey start with a review of your children’s history. Then a thorough exam is conducted of the child’s mouth including the teeth, tongue, gums and palate. This evaluation assesses the risk of tooth decay, the condition of the soft tissue and gums, the development of the child’s bite and the growth of their mouth. If x-rays are necessary they will be taken and a professional teeth cleaning should be conducted as well. Of course, there will be a question and answer period about what your children are eating and drinking and how often they are brushing and flossing. This will be reinforced on every visit regularly.

Good Practices As Your Children Grow

You’ll want to teach your children some of the following simple steps to prevent them from getting cavities and to protect their teeth and gums. Just like any adult, teach them to brush their teeth twice a day. Buy for them a fluoride toothpaste that helps remove the sticky film on the teeth that turns into plaque and is the primary cause for tooth decay. Teach them how to brush properly as well. Take your time and get all surfaces of the teeth. Monitor their brushing because children will always rush through this activity. Have them brush their tongue as well. Make if fun! Also have them floss their teeth once a day. This removes the plaque from between the teeth and next to the gum line. Flossing should start at around age 4 with help from you. By around age 8 they should be able to floss properly on their own. Lead by example when it comes to eating and drinking healthy. Limit your children’s intake of starchy or sugary foods which produce plaque acids that accelerate tooth decay. Snacking is detrimental to children’s oral health. Snack foods like potato chips, cookies, candy, pretzels, dried fruits and soft drinks have a lot of sugar and starch and create an immediate plaque attack. Limit snacking and finish the snack with water to rinse away the plaque acids. Consider having them use a straw to limit the contact with the sugary drink and the teeth. Try to make sure their drinking water has fluoride in it. If your municipal supply or well water doesn’t have it Drs. Ritter and Ramsey can provide or prescribe a daily fluoride supplement. Of course, regular office visits to Drs. Ritter and Ramsey is the best way to build good habits. Twice a year exams and teeth cleaning in the office can go a long way to maintaining good habits as your children continue to grow and begin making their own decisions about their oral hygiene. Their healthy smile will be a big part of who they become. Remember, you children are awesome! Teach them good habits every day so they become a better YOU! Good dental health is easy. Appropriate nutrition, regular brushing and flossing, an ideal quantity of fluoride and twice a year exams with Drs. Ritter or Ramsey. Good habits for both you and your children to practice.

ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY DENTISTRY SINCE 1994

Traditionally, hours of hand labor in a dental laboratory are invested in these precise products. With the adoption of more technology into dentistry, digital imaging continues to grow in importance. Most restorations begin with a mold of your mouth that involves messy impression materials. With the Itero Digital Scanner, you can say goodbye to the mess. Itero eliminates this step, replacing it with simple digital images captured with a handheld wand. The images quickly appear on a computer monitor as 3-D models of your teeth.

Expert Tooth Restoration Using Porcelain Crowns

Porcelain dental crowns are used to restore dental implants, to secure dental bridges, restore and help repair broken or damaged teeth. Dental crowns can be performed in one visit. The goal with dental crowns is to create a natural looking smile. These types of crowns can add the strength and durability to any tooth with any needed repair. Aesthetically, dental crowns are used to cover a discolored tooth and even narrow the gaps between largely separated teeth.

The Finest Porcelain Veneers for a New Smile

At Ritter & Ramsey, watching patients discover a brilliant new smile is the highlight of our days. Porcelain veneers can transform a smile dramatically. A beautiful new set of porcelain veneers can correct chips, stains, and even deeply discolored teeth. But they can also alter the length and size of teeth, or help teeth that seem rotated appear straight. While it sounds dramatic, only the stunning visual outcome is surprising. Porcelain veneers provide a highly conservative approach to aesthetic smile makeovers.
