About Palm Beach Shores, Florida

History

Palm Beach Shores, Florida is located in Palm Beach County on Singer Island. The history of the community is around 100 years old, but the history of the region is much older. Native tribes inhabited the region of centuries prior to Juan Ponce de Leon’s arrival in 1513. The arrival of Ponce de Leon and his crew of Spanish Conquistadors forever altered the population of the region. Following their arrival, the native populations were eventually killed or displaced from the land. The Spanish then claimed dominion over the Florida peninsula making it a colony of the Spanish empire.

Eventually Florida became a state in the union and the region of Palm Beach County thrived as an agricultural center. Around 60 years after Florida’s statehood, the first known settlements took hold on Singer Island. The community that arose there was called Inlet City. It arose in 1906 from a spontaneous settlement of fishermen and squatters. The island remained disconnected from the mainland until 1925. Unfortunately, the first bridge connecting the mainland and the island only lasted a few years. It was destroyed by a hurricane in 1928 and eventually rebuilt in 1935. The impact of the Great Depression was felt throughout all of southeastern Florida. Its impact on Singer Island was felt by way of keeping the population of the community from growing.

The outbreak of World War II rescued the region from the depression. The U.S. government pumped tons of money into the region to build coastal defenses. This brought increased population and economic possibilities. The government of Palm Beach Shores was officially formed in 1947.
