History

In 1902, the Southern States Land and Timber Company purchased two million acres of land in Southeast Florida. Part of these two million acres would eventually become Loxahatchee Groves, Florida. The original plan for the community was for it to be a farming community. It was first referred to as Loxahatchee Farms when it was purchased from the Southern States Land and Timber Company in 1920.

The 1920’s were a rough time for small communities in this part of the state. Many of the smaller communities began disappearing. Loxahatchee Groves was able to survive though because of its connection to West Palm Beach by the Southern Boulevard and Okeechobee Boulevard.

The town prospered in the 1930’s because of the agricultural success it was having. One of the original founders’ brothers was instrumental in encouraging residents to plant citrus trees at this time. As a result the community added nearly 60,000 new trees and eventually a packinghouse, which shipped the citrus throughout the region.

Throughout the rest of the 20 th century, the community’s residents tried with all their might to resist development and change. The community became known as “Florida’s Last Frontier”. Residents tried their best to discourage streetlights, paved roads, and sewers. Eventually, the town gave way to progress and was incorporated in 2006. Today the population is around 3,000 people.

Things to do

Loxahatchee Groves is located in a perfect spot for things to do. All of south Florida’s most well known attractions are within driving distance.

Southeast Florida is most famous for its beaches. The Gulf Stream passes by the coast bringing year round perfect weather and warm water. People come from all over the country to experience it. Some of the most popular activities are on the water. They include jet skiing, boating, parasailing, snorkeling, scuba diving, drift diving, and swimming. There are many types of beaches to be found as well. They include busy beaches and quiet beaches. You can find any type of beach that you are
looking for.

The other things Southeast Florida is known for is golfing. There are more golf courses than you can count within distance of Loxahatchee Groves. These courses range in skill level and price per round. The one thing they all have in common is the picturesque scenery. No matter what kind of course you are looking for you will find it around the community.

There are also several nature spots in and around the town. One of the most well known is just west of the community. The Lion Country Safari borders the town and is one of the most popular attractions in the region. It is a drive through safari. Visitors get to drive among the animals in this unique experience. Other nature experiences include the Royal Palm Beach Pines natural Area, the Pond Cypress Natural Area, Juno Dunes Natural Area, and Loggerhead Park. All of these offer their own unique nature experience.

Loxahatchee Groves is also located within driving distance of West Palm Beach and Jupiter, which means there are several restaurants, unique shopping, nightlife, and various activities a short drive away.
