About Limestone Creek, Florida

History

Limestone Creek, Florida is located just to the west of the town of Jupiter. The area’s history is a rich one that dates back to a time before Europeans had ever made their mark on the peninsula. The area was originally inhabited by various Seminole tribes throughout the centuries. These people thrived off of the abundance of the region. The area has a natural abundance of food from its proximity to the ocean and its perfect climate for growing fruits and vegetables. In 1513 Juan Ponce de Leon landed in Florida and quickly claimed the region for Spain. When Ponce de Leon and his men arrived in the vicinity of Jupiter, they named it Jobe (pronounced Hoe-bae) after the Seminole village that was located nearby. The English would one day misinterpret this name when they took control over the Florida colony. They believed the name to be Jove the mythological god that they called Jupiter. Since they were taking over the region and eliminating the Spanish influence, they renamed the area to Jupiter. The region went through a significant boom in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This boom was fueled by the railroad and the abundance of agriculture in the region.

Unfortunately, the Great Depression caused the boom to collapse and ushered in hardship for the next 20 years. The outbreak of World War II turned everything around. The United States government spent tons of money on the region in order to beef up coastal defenses during the war. This influx of dollars turned the economy around and brought in a new wave of population growth. Over the next 50 years, the area would become one of the country’s premier tourist destinations.
