The Lake Worth beach has one of the last remaining large public beaches in all of Southeast Florida. The huge public beach is also popular for the Lockhart Municipal Pier jutting into the ocean.Having been refurbished after Hurricane Frances destroyed it in 2004 the pier creates sandbars which in turn catch ocean swells creating some very nice, consistent waves for surfing. Located 60 miles north of Miami and just nine miles south of West Palm Beach Lake Worth has some intriguing historical facts.
History
The first settlers in Lake Worth were Samuel and Fannie James, ex-slaves. The bought 187 acres in 1885 under the Homestead Act. They later bought another 480 acres and raised pineapples. The first post office was opened in a small dry good shop and Fannie James was the first postmaster. There were many small pioneer homesteads in the area at the time. In 1896 when the railroad went from West Palm Beach to Miami a land development effort was created to start a town site which became the city of Lake Worth today. The town continued to grow and was incorporated in 1913. Many of the first residents were farmers benefiting from the longer growing season. Another chapter was the double whammy of a 1928 hurricane and the Great Depression. The city spent years in dire straits. After WWII development flourished again with immigrants from Quebec, Finland and Germany building small cottages. The heritage they brought is evident today with beer halls, chocolatiers, delis and Lutheran churches. In further diversification the community saw more immigration in the 1980s added Hispanics, Hiatians, Cubans and Guatemalan-Mayas to the culture.
Lake Worth Today
The downtown area has seen a huge resurgence. It has distinct character and has become a regular destination for locals and tourists. In fact, it is the geographic and artistic center of Palm Beach County. It features art galleries, nightclubs, live music, coffee shops, many restaurants, antique and retail stores and sidewalk cafes. It is considered the artistic soul with a historic theater and a museum. There are over 1,000 historic buildings in the downtown area alone. The city today of 38,000 residents has much to offer. There are several unique yearly events, like the Street Painting Festival and Finlandia Week. With the neighboring community of Lantana you will find the largest population of Finnish in the United States. The largest Oktoberfest in all of South Florida also is held in the city. Every two weeks there is an “Evenings on the Avenue” held downtown as well. The community has events scheduled every single month, from concerts to triathlons to beach bonfires to Farmers Markets to car shows to food truck invasions to Santa’s Workshops. There is an overabundance of city parks for you to enjoy your green space. And they offer different recreational activities as well. There is always something for everyone.
