More information about Atlantis, FL
History
Atlantis, Florida is located in Palm Beach County. The history of the community is relatively modern. The history of the area dates back centuries however. When Juan
Ponce de Leon arrived in Florida in 1513, he found various tribes living along the eastern coastline. Their populations were several thousands and they had lived
there for centuries. After the arrival of the Spanish, disease, warfare, and enslavement wiped most of them out over the course of the next several hundred years. Eventually Florida achieved statehood and the coastline began to develop.
Atlantis’s history dates back to 1958. That was when Paul Kintz and Nathan Hunt, two real estate developers, purchased the land in order to begin the residential
development. Prior to this, the land was a part of Mulberry Farms, which was owned by Phillip D. Lewis. Mulberry Farms was a thriving citrus farm with several
thousand cattle and chickens. The original community was a gated golf community with the Lost City Golf Club at the center. It was eventually incorporated in 1959.
Today
The population of Atlantis is just over 2,000 people. It is still a small, gated community surrounding the country club. It did eventually expand outward a little
to include some land used today for commercial purposes.
Things to do
Atlantis is located in a prime part of Southeastern Florida. The community itself is small and mostly residential, but the surrounding area is full of fun things to do for
people of all ages. The area is most well known for beaches and golf courses. The community is within driving distance of several of Florida’s top beaches. The Gulf Stream passes by the coast and brings with it warm water and perfect weather. Beach goers take part in various beach and water activities. A few of the most notable are boating, parasailing, jet skiing, snorkeling, drift diving, swimming, and all the many beach activities. There are wonderful beaches to the north and south of the community.
The other major attraction in the area is golf. The community country club is the Lost City Golf Club. It’s holes snake throughout the entire community. There are also
hundreds of others in the area. Golfers of all skills will find a course that fits them. There are several places to experience nature in the area as well. Just to the east of
the community is John Prince Memorial Park. This park is absolutely huge and it contains camping, playgrounds, golf, nature hikes, and various ball fields. The park is bordered by Lake Osborne. This lake is a popular spot for anglers and is a great place to take a walk or a relaxing sit by the water.
Atlantis also sits just a short drive south of West Palm Beach. This means that you are only a short drive away from restaurants, nightlife, shopping, and more. Other
attractions include the Palm Beach Zoo, the McCarthy Wildlife Sanctuary, the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, and the Norton Museum of Art. There are also
several more parks and places to hang out in the Florida sunshine.
