Adult Dentistry

One of the most common misconceptions that adults have is that once they have passed the cavity-prone years, there is no need to continue visiting the dentist. This could not be further from the truth. As we age, the need for regular dental visits and preventative care becomes more important, as our risk for developing other, more severe dental issues only increases.

At Ritter and Ramsey, we are committed to working diligently to help you receive the oral health support you need and help you achieve a smile that is true to you and gives you the confidence you deserve. If you have any questions about what adult dentistry services we offer or would like to schedule an appointment, please contact us at (561) 626-6667.

Common Dental Conditions For Adults

There are a wide range of dental conditions that commonly develop in adults that are important to be aware of, including the following:

  • Gum disease: It is not uncommon for gum disease to develop later in life, especially if you have neglected regular cleanings. When your oral health is left untreated long enough, periodontal diseases can begin to develop as bacteria, plaque, and tartar build up. If left untreated long enough, these diseases can result in the loss of teeth and the development of other health issues. If you have not had a regular checkup for your teeth in some time, it is important that you schedule one soon to see if you are currently at risk for gum disease.
  • Dental fillings breaking down: Although some fillings can last up to 20 years or more, most fillings have a life expectancy of around 8-10 years. As the fillings you had placed when you were younger begin to break down, bacteria can begin to form beneath them, which can result in the decay of your tooth. If left untreated long enough, this decay can deepen into the nerve of your tooth, which may necessitate a root canal.
  • Oral Cancers: Although originally believed to be unique to smokers, the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research indicates that men who are 40 years or older are at the greatest risk for developing oral cancer. It is estimated by the American Cancer Society that every year, approximately 50,000 people will be diagnosed with cancer of the mouth, tongue, or throat, and of those, nearly 9,750 cases will be fatal. If you have not been screened for this recently, especially if you are a smoker or regular user of alcohol, schedule a routine checkup as soon as possible.

Tips For Proper Oral Health Care Maintenance

Although there are times when oral health issues in adults is unavoidable, there are several things you can do to help promote good oral health habits and prevent issues from developing in the first place. To best take care of your teeth, be sure to follow these oral health practices.

  • Practice consistent and proper brushing and flossing habits: One of the most important things adults can do to maintain good oral health is to practice good daily oral hygiene habits. Make sure that you are brushing at least twice daily and for two minutes at a time when you do brush. It is also important to floss daily. If you have an aversion to flossing, consider using toothpicks or specialty brushes. It is also important that you rinse your toothbrush thoroughly and replace it regularly, because bacteria can form on your toothbrush.
  • Limit sugar and starch: Your daily eating habits also play a critical role in the overall health and longevity of your teeth. Avoid foods that are high in starch as much as possible, as these foods are essentially fuel for bacteria. If you do drink sugary liquids, try to use a straw, as doing so will limit the amount of exposure of sugar to your teeth before swallowing. It is also important to drink water after every meal. Swishing water after you have finished eating can help clean remaining deposits of food.
  • Address issues before they become bigger problems: Many people understandably have some phobias or concerns about visiting a dentist, especially when they suspect something may be wrong, but the longer you avoid addressing an issue, the more severe that issue will become, and the greater the likelihood will be that other problems develop as a result.
  • Schedule regular visits: In addition to practicing these self-care habits, the other best way for maintaining good oral health as an adult is to regularly visit your dentist every six months. These visits allow your dentist to provide you with deep cleanings and monitor your overall dental health, catching problems before they become real issues.

As we age, it becomes increasingly important to schedule regular checkups and address issues before they develop. Scheduling an appointment for any of the previously mentioned procedures is your first step towards a confident, healthy smile. To begin your journey towards the perfect smile, please contact us at (561) 626-6667.

At Ritter and Ramsey, we treat every patient like a member of our family and are committed to changing lives by creating beautiful smiles!

ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY DENTISTRY SINCE 1994

Traditionally, hours of hand labor in a dental laboratory are invested in these precise products. With the adoption of more technology into dentistry, digital imaging continues to grow in importance. Most restorations begin with a mold of your mouth that involves messy impression materials. With the Itero Digital Scanner, you can say goodbye to the mess. Itero eliminates this step, replacing it with simple digital images captured with a handheld wand. The images quickly appear on a computer monitor as 3-D models of your teeth.

Expert Tooth Restoration Using Porcelain Crowns

Porcelain dental crowns are used to restore dental implants, to secure dental bridges, restore and help repair broken or damaged teeth. Dental crowns can be performed in one visit. The goal with dental crowns is to create a natural looking smile. These types of crowns can add the strength and durability to any tooth with any needed repair. Aesthetically, dental crowns are used to cover a discolored tooth and even narrow the gaps between largely separated teeth.

The Finest Porcelain Veneers for a New Smile

At Ritter & Ramsey, watching patients discover a brilliant new smile is the highlight of our days. Porcelain veneers can transform a smile dramatically. A beautiful new set of porcelain veneers can correct chips, stains, and even deeply discolored teeth. But they can also alter the length and size of teeth, or help teeth that seem rotated appear straight. While it sounds dramatic, only the stunning visual outcome is surprising. Porcelain veneers provide a highly conservative approach to aesthetic smile makeovers.
