More information about Royal Palm Beach, FL
With a current population of over 38,000 residents the interesting thing about Royal Palm Beach, Florida is that it in not on a beach. Located 10 miles inland from the Atlantic Ocean it sits right west of West Palm Beach.
History
The city was incorporated in 1959. Like so many communities in the state of Florida it was developed on primarily uninhabited swamp ground. The area dates back several hundred years with the original residents being the Native American Seminole Indians. At their peak they had a village of over 25,000 Native Americans. The majority of these Indians saw their demise through diseases brought with European settlers or the three wars they fought against the US government over possession of the ground. In the 1950’s a couple from Philadelphia, Sam and Hattie Friedland, purchased 65,000 acres in what will become Royal Palm Beach. The Friedlands then sold their land to a Miami Developer by the name of Arthur Dresser. In an elaborate ground-breaking ceremony that was attended by Seminole tribe officials the intense earth moving began. Desser brought the vision but his company came up short when they filed for bankruptcy in 1961. Sam Friedland bought the ground back. Friedland was a very successful grocery chain store owner. As a savvy businessman knowing nothing about real estate development he put together a solid team that grew the town in the 1960s. In the late 1970s a marketing push grew the city over the next 15 years.
Royal Palm Beach Today
The community is really known for the concerted efforts it makes towards its many parks and the general public desire to protect their green space. Currently the city has set the standard of 10 acres of parkland per every 1,000 resident. The city just recently acquired 190 acres to create a master central park. Since 1990 the community has been named as a Tree City USA and the entire community is designated as a bird sanctuary. The Royal Palm Beach Pines Natural Area has the native Florida ecosystems intertwined within nearly 800 acres. The protected splendor of the natural prairies, marshes, swamps, mesic and flatwoods coupled with the wildlife are all easy to see via a stunning trail system, boardwalk and elevated observation platforms. In 2008 Family Circle Magazine recognized the Village of Royal Palm Beach as one of their Top 10 Best Towns for Families in the United States. The variety of family and youth activities is way above average as is the ratings of the public and private elementary and middle schools. There is plenty to do with your family to create some memories. Outdoor activities and watersports abound like swimming, paddle boarding and just solid beach time. There is golf, tennis, horseback riding, hiking, biking or meeting sea turtles and manatees. There is an abundance of shopping and family friendly dining. If the family likes to explore there are plenty of opportunities to do that as well. Royal Palm Beach is a beautiful city in the heart of the Palm Beaches.
