More information about Palm City, FL
Is the whole greater than the sum of its parts? Aristotle argued that fact and one might do the same when describing Palm City, Florida. Let’s try to explain and see if there is merit here.
A Census Based Population
Let’s start with Palm City and then increase the circles. Palm City is considered a Census Based Population. This is a given area that the number of residents in the area define the area, not really a community as such with municipal services. In this case we have more than 23,000 residents living in a little over 16 square miles. Police, Fire and EMS services are provided by Martin County which is divided into five districts to provide these and more government services. The median household income in the Palm City rural area was about $72,250 and the average home cost was $283,700.
Location, Location, Location
Palm City sits on the St. Lucie River and the Indian River Lagoon. Directly across the body of water is yet another census based area, that of Stuart, Florida, with a population of about 16,000. Let’s keep pushing that circle out. Palm City and Stuart are part of the Port St. Lucie Metropolitan Statistical Area. The municipality with the included surrounding “parts” has a total population of over 185,000 residents surpassing Fort Lauderdale. Port St. Lucie sits on the north banks of the St. Lucie River and the Indian River Lagoon. Stuart sits on the mouth of the river to to the Atlantic and Palm City sits on the south banks. The river is only seven miles long, again a “part” of the much, much larger Indian River Lagoon, which is home to more than 4,000 plants and animal species. Since our theme here is the parts versus the whole, we have two more circles to introduce. The St. Lucie River was historically a freshwater river with no connection to the Atlantic Ocean. That happened with time and then watershed modifications were made to connect it to Lake Okeechobee. This has had less than desirable results with the lake’s discharge of very poor water quality. Most notably has been algae blooms from the nutrients in the agricultural runoff. The final circle, piece of the puzzle, or “part” is the entire area is part of the Treasure Coast. This title is the result of the sinking in the year 1715 Spanish Treasure Fleet from a hurricane. In 1961 salvagers began discovering and recovering the treasure of the coast of this area of southern Florida. This now describes the coastal area north of Palm Beach up to Cape Canaveral. You decide if the whole is greater than its part. Palm City is 100 miles north of Miami and 40 miles north of Palm Beach. The area receives high marks for the lack of crime, quality of schools, a great place to raise a family and a terrific place to retire. The entire area is so diverse there are many, many activities to occupy all ages, making the whole greater than this part.
